The Growing Crisis
Understanding Orbital Environment
Over 27,000 pieces of tracked debris currently orbit Earth, traveling at speeds up to 17,500 mph. Even a paint fleck can damage a spacecraft at that velocity.
The Human Impact
How It Affects Life on Earth
GPS, weather forecasting, communications, and national security all depend on satellites threatened by the growing debris field surrounding our planet.
The Solutions
Clearing the Final Frontier
From international treaties to cutting-edge removal technologies, Jason P. Crutchfield explores what scientists and governments are doing to solve this urgent problem.
The Future of Space
Protecting Tomorrow's Orbit
Without action, Earth's orbital environment faces a cascade effect that could make certain orbits unusable for generations. This book explores what's at stake and why it matters to all of us.
About the Author
Author | Immensum Press
Jason P. Crutchfield has spent his life paying attention to the systems most people never see. As a child, he watched the night sky and asked the questions that would eventually shape his career. How does it all stay up there? What happens when it comes down? Who is responsible for the things we leave behind?
Those questions followed him from his earliest days in the United States Army, where he served with the 2nd Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment, through a career spanning more than three decades of senior leadership across the United States Intelligence Community, the Department of Defense, and the Department of Energy.
Jason wrote Space Debris: Clearing the Final Frontier to bring this urgent conversation to the people most affected — engineers, operators, regulators, and citizens. He is also a longtime commercial diver and certified scuba diving instructor. Jason holds an MBA from Duke University and a Bachelor of Science from the University of Alaska Anchorage.
